About Unani System of medicine

Unani System of medicine evolved in Greece and was first introduced to India by the Arabs. It is also called as Greco-Arab medicine, Unani Tibb, Arabian medicine, or Islamic medicine. Hippocrates is known as the father of this system of medicine. The theoretical framework of Unani medicine is based on his teachings. It is a traditional medicinal system and commonly practiced in South Asia. The origins of Unani medicines are found in the doctrines of the ancient Greek physicians Hippocrates and Galen. It was later developed and refined through systematic experiment by the Arabs. Unani medicines are prepared from medicinal plants, minerals, animals products, etc. In Unani medicine, single drugs or their combinations in raw forms are preferred over compound formulations. The naturally occurring drugs used in this system are usually free from any side effects.

Ingredients of Arq-e-Amber

Erq Ember is an Unani medicine having slight acrid taste, light yellow color and lemon like smell. It is prepared from following ingredients:

Method of preparation

  1. Take all the ingredients of pharmacopoeial quality.
  2. Clean and dry the ingredients 1 to 23 and 25 under shade.
  3. Crush all the ingredients from 1 to 27 in an iron mortar to obtain a coarse powder.
  4. Soak the coarse powder in desired quantity of water for 24 hours.
  5. Transfer the soaked powder into distillation apparatus along with water.
  6. Crush the seeds of freshly peeled off Anar and cut the Seb into small pieces.
  7. Add the crushed Anar and small pieces of Seb into the soaked drug.
  8. Hang the Amber into outlet of distillation plant by covering it with cloth.
  9. Collect 6.75 liters of Arq-e-Amber.
  10. Add the required quantity of Arq-e-Keora, Arq-e-Badranjboya and Arq-e-Gaozaban into collected Arq.

  1. Amber is a yellow resinous mass of trees settled thousands of years back and may have small insects and other vegetable matter. There is nothing miraculous about it except that it is tough to find and sometimes used as an ornament.
    The second product is dirty white resin-like wax from a sea fish, found floating in the sea water rarely.
