Ayurveda: Avipattikar Churna for Hyperacidity

Avipattikar Churna is a polyherbal Ayurvedic medicine indicated in hyperacidity. It has antacid property. It reduces excess Pitta and balances tridosha. It is useful in heartburn, ulcers, colitis, stomach pains, indigestion, and chronic constipation.

Composition of Avipattikar churna

Avipattikara Churna is a powder preparation made with the ingredients in the Formulation composition given below.

Formulation composition:

  • Maricha Piper nigrum Fr. 1 part
  • Pippali Piper longum Fr. 1 part
  • Haritaki Terminalia chebula P. 1 part
  • Bibhitaka Terminalia bellirica P. 1 part
  • Amalaki Phyllanthus emblica P. 1 part (Emblica offcinalis)
  • Musta Cyperus rotundus Rz. 1 part
  • Vida lavana 1 part
  • Vidanga Embelia ribes Fr. 1 part
  • Ela (Sukshmaila) Eletteria cardamomum Sd. 1 part
  • Patra (Tejapatra)Cinnamomum tamala Lf. 1 part
  • Lavanga Syzygium aromaticum Fl. Bd. 11 parts
  • Trivrit Ipomoea turpethum Rt. 44 parts
  • Sharkara Cane sugar – 66 parts

Trikatu is a combination of dry ginger, black pepper and long pepper. It is effective for burning ama (metabolic waste and toxins) which is the prime cause of all disease. It supports better digestion and cures constipation. It stimulates the liver to secrete bile which is vital for fat digestion and absorption. It also balances Kapha.

Triphala is a combination of Terminalia chebula, Terminalia bellerica and Emblica officinalis. It is used extensively in Ayurveda for the treatment of digestive diseases. It is a tonic for the whole body. It has been used in various gastric disorders including intestinal inflammation. Amla, has significant acid lowering, cooling and anti-ulcer propertis. Triphala is a rich source of tannins, which is known to affect the integrity of mucus membrane. Tannins with their protein precipitating and vasoconstriction effects could be advantageous in preventing ulcer development.

A study done on rats with induced gastric ulcers, concluded that Triphala formulations possess significant anti-ulcer activity. This activity depends mainly on inhibition of free radical generation due to restoration of free radicals scavenging enzymes, enhancing the stability of gastric mucosal barrier and gastric cytoprotection against stress-induced gastric ulceration in rats.

Trivrit is dried root of Operculina turpethum (Linn.) Silva Manso Syn. Ipomoea turpethum R. Br. (Fam. Convolvulaceae);a large perennial twiner with milky juice and fleshy roots, found growing wild nearly throughout the country. It is laso knwown as Nishoth Teudi, Tvuri, Dhdhakalami, Nishothra, Tella, Tegada and Turbud.

The roots are purgative in action. It has the following Ayurvedic action:

Rasa (taste on the tongue): Kasaya (Astringent), Madhura (Sweet), Katu (Pungent), Tikta (Bitter), Tikshna (Sharp)

Guna (Pharmacological Action): Laghu (Light), Tikshna (Sharp), Ruksha (Dry)

Virya: Ushna (Heating)

Vipaka (transformed state after digestion): Katu (Pungent)

Trivrt is used in Ayurveda for the treatment of constipation, digestive ailments, fever, anemia, intestinal parasites, etc.

Mishri is raw sugar or sugar candy. It consists of lumps of crystal. It has demulcent and cooling action. It reduces Vata/wind inside the body. It improves the taste of medicine.

Clove is a condiment used for medicinal purose. It has pungent taste, cool in potency, light, penetrating and oily. It pacifies Pitta, and Kapha dosha<it gives relief in pain, excess pitta, excess phlem and blood disorders. It is astringent, appetizer and improves digetsion.

Elaichi is light and dry in nature. It is useful in piles, stones and vomitting. It improves appetite and digestion.

Method of preparation

Take all ingredients of pharmacopoeial quality.

Clean, dry and powder the ingredients numbered 1 to 7 and 9 to 13 individually in a pulverizer and pass through sieve number 85. Prepare fine powder of Vida lavana and Sharkara separately and pass through sieve number 85. Weigh separately each powdered ingredient, mix together in specified ratio and pass through sieve number 44 to obtain a homogeneous blend. Pack it in a tightly closed container to protect from light and moisture.

Description: Light brown, fine powder, odour characteristic of clove, with a sweet, spicy and pungent taste. The powder completely pass on through sieve number 44 and not less than 50 percent pass on through sieve number 85.

Storage: Store in a cool place in a tightly closed container, protected from light and moisture.
