Know the Ingredients

Karpura is also known as Ghanasara, Chandra, Himahva, Himabaluka (Sanskrit) and Natural Camphor (English). It is obtained from the leaves, chipped wood and roots of Cinnamomum camphora (L.) Nees & Eberm. (Fam. Lauraceae) and whole plant of Ocimum kilimandscharicum Guerke (Fam. Lamiaceae) by hydro distillation process.

Karpura is colorless or white crystals, granules or crystalline masses. It has penetrating and characteristic odour and tastes pungent, aromatic, and followed by a sensation of cold. Kapoor has aromatic, bitter, thermogenic, diaphoretic, stimulant, antiseptic, pain relieving, expectorant, and anti-inflammatory activities.

Kapoor is used internally in small quantities for the treatment of colds and gastrointestinal complaints, but potentially neurotoxic if ingested in large doses. In excess it can cause delirium, spasms and respiratory control disturbances. Camphor should not be used during pregnancy.

  5. Lekhana: Drugs which dry up the body constituents and body secretions. Decrease Kapha and fat and emaciate the whole body.
  6. Madakarak: Causes intoxication.
  7. Pachana: Digests Ama but does not increase appetite.
  8. Shvasahara: Cures asthma.
  9. Vedanasthapana: Subsides pain, anodynes and analgesics.
  10. Vrishya: Increases the quantity of semen.

1 – Karpura is indicated in Adyaman (Flatulence with gurgling sound), Agnimandya (Digestive impairment), Amavata (Rheumatism), Aruci (Tastelessness), Atisara (Diarrhoea), Daha (Burning sensation), Dantapuya (Pyorrhoea), Dantashula (Toothache), Jirnapratishyaya (Chronic sinusitis), Kandu (Itching), Kantharoga (Disease of throat), Kasa (Cough), Klaibya (Male impotence), Krim(Helminthiasis/Worm infestation), Kushtha (Diseases of the skin), Medoroga (Obesity), Parshvashla (Intercoastal neuralgia and pleurodynia), Sandhishula (Joint pain), Svasa (Dyspnoea/Asthma), Trishna (Thirst), Tvakroga (Skin diseases), Vicarcika (Eczema), Vishavikara (Disorders due to poison), Vishuchika (Gastro-enteritis with piercing pain), Vrikkaroga (Renal disorder).

The recommended doses of Karpura is 125mg to 325 mg.

2 – Mishri / raw sugar / candy sugar or Rock candy consist of big white, sweet lumps of crystals. It is obtained by cooling supersaturated sugar solution.

It has demulcent, cooling, aphrodisiac properties. Mishri intake increases weight and gives energy. It reduces Vata/wind inside the body. It improves the taste of medicine. It is indicated in cough, burning in the chest, tastelessness, and digestive disorders. It increases bile secretion and supports digestion. The combination of fennel and Mishri is chewed after meals as mouth freshener.

3 – Trikatu is combination of dry ginger, black pepper and long pepper. It is effective for burning ama (metabolic waste and toxins) which is the prime cause of all disease. It supports better digestion and cures constipation. It stimulates the liver to secrete bile which is vital for fat digestion and absorption. Trikatu is used in the treatment of jaundice. It also balances Kapha.

4 – Shunthi (Synonyms: Zingiber officinale, Sukku, Chukku, Aushadha, Muhaushadha, Nagara, Vishva, Vishvabheshaja, Shringavera, Vishva) is dry ginger powder. It is hot in potency and increases Pitta and decreases Kapha. It is a digestive stimulant. Ginger is also used to give relief in seasickness and morning sickness.

5 – Maricha (Marich) is known as Gol Mirch, Kali Mirch or Black Pepper. It is dried unripe seeds of the plant, Piper nigrum a perennial shrub. It is pungent (Katu) in taste, hot in potency and pungent after digestion (Katu Vipak). It mainly works on digestive, circulatory and respiratory system. It is expectorant, carminative, antipyretic, anthelmintic and antiperiodic. Black Pepper is useful in difficult breathing, chronic indigestion, obesity, sinus congestion, fever, intermittent fever, cold extremities, colic, cooking spice, cholera, gastric ailments, gas, diarrhea, hemorrhoids, worms, sore throat and cough.

Black Pepper should be taken cautiously in High Pitta and digestive inflammations.

6 – Pippali is known as Pippali, Pipal, Long Pepper and Dried Catkins. It is fruits of a plant Piper longum. It is pungent (Katu) in taste, hot in potency and sweet (Madhur Vipak) after digestion. The main organs on which it works are digestive, reproductive and respiratory. It has analgesic, anthelmintic, aphrodisiac, carminative and expectorant properties and is used in the treatment of digestive and respiratory ailments such as gas, bloating, distension, digestive weakness, excess phlegm, asthma, bronchitis, colds, coughs and laryngitis. It is also used in rheumatic pain, gout, paralysis, etc. as it reduces Vata inside the body, gives relief in pain and digests Ama (toxic waste produced in the body to incomplete digestion).

Pippali increases Pitta inside the body. So people of Pitta nature should use it cautiously. Moreover, the long term and excessive use of Pippali is contraindicated in Ayurveda.

Pippali and Shunthi increases Agni (digestive fire) and destroys Ama in the body.

  6. Expectorant: Promotes the secretion of sputum by the air passages, used to treat coughs.

In one study, Amrita Bindu was tested as a supplement to therapy for a period of 12 months in 36 children suffering from asthma (chronic inflammatory disease with excessive free radical generation in lungs and blood cells). The patients were followed up by monitoring their clinical conditions, therapeutic doses of anti-asthmatic drugs, free radical generation, lipid peroxidation (LPO) and antioxidants in blood.

At the end of 3 months of Amrita Bindu supplementation, the patients had stopped all anti-asthmatic medications and were free from attacks of asthma.

In another study, Amrita Bindu was tested for its effect in maintaining antioxidant defence systems in blood and the liver when exposed to a carcinogenic nitrosamine, N-methyl-N’-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG). Amrita Bindu supplementation prevented MNNG induced depletion of the antioxidant enzymes and the scavenger antioxidants glutathione and vitamins A, C and E. Amrita Bindu provides protection against free radical and reactive oxygen species induced tissue lipid peroxidation and the resultant tissue degeneration.

Suggestions, Contraindications, Interactions, Side-effects, and Warnings

Since this medicine contains ingredients like kanjiram (Strychnos nux-vomica), navasaram (Ammonium chloride) it is not advisable to consume the product more than the allowed dosage. It may lead to giddiness, fainting, and head ache.

In few cases, there can be slight increase in symptoms like pain and burning sensation. In such case the dose should be reduced till the pain subside.

Amrita Bindu is found to be a very safe medicine which can be used for prolonged periods without any side effects but it is always advised that the medicine should be used in the recommended dosage.

  1. It may cause stool to turn dark.
  2. In some cases there is a little weight loss when taken for months.
