Indian Lentil Masoor Dal Recipes


In India masoor dal is very common and people eat this dal with rice and chapatti along with other dishes. In some part of country people call it malka also. There are several recipes for this dal but two are very common. I will write two recipes for masoor dal.

Recipe for 1st Whole masoor dal


  1. Whole masoor dal 1 cup

  2. Ginger 1 inch

  3. Garlic 7-8 cloves

  4. Onion for paste 2 medium size

  5. Mustard oil 4-5 spoon.

  6. Onion Ring four five

  7. Cumin seed 1/2 table spoon

  8. Bay leaves 1-2

  9. Fenugreek (Methi)1/2 table spoon

  10. Coriander powder 2 table spoon

  11. Turmeric powder 1/2 table spoon

  12. Garam masala 1 table spoon

  13. Cumin powder 1 table spoon

  14. Red chilly powder 1 table spoon

  15. Tomato 1-2

  16. Coriander leaves 1-2 bunch


  1. Prepare masala paste of Onion, Garlic, Zinger, Turmeric powder, Coriander powder, Garam Masala, Red chilly powder in a grinder by adding some water

  2. Take a pressure cooker and heat oil in it

  3. Now add bay leaf, Fenugreek  and cumin seed and stir it till color change

  4. Now add onion ring and stir it till rings get brown

  5. Now add masala paste and salt and cook it by stirring till oil separation

  6. Add washed masoor to it and add 5 cup water

  7. Close the lid and pressure cook it for 10 minutes

  8. After this wait for pressure release

  9. Check whether dal is cooked properly or not because some masoor lentils take more time in cooking. If it is not cooked well then re-cook it for 3-5 min

  10. Now add tomato and boil dal for 1-2 minutes

  11. Add green coriander leaves (You can also add finally chopped ginger)and serve it in main course along with chapatti and rice.

  12. First recipe is for red masoor dal washed (malka) and second it for whole masoor.

    Recipe for 2nd Masoor dal.


    1. 1 cup red masoor/malka dal

    2. 1-2 dried red chilly whole

    3. Cumin seed 1 table spoon

    4. Ginger garlic paste 1 table spoon

    5. Turmeric 1/2 table spoon

    6. Mustard oil/ Clarified butter(Desi ghee) 1-2 spoon

    7. Salt to taste


    Wash dal carefully and put dal and 4 cup water in pressure cooker. Add ginger garlic paste, turmeric powder and salt. Close the lid and pressure cook it on high flame till cooker blows first whistle and turn off stove. Wait till all the pressure is released. Dal is ready now you have to make and add tadaka to it.

    Heat oil/ghee in a deep frying pan and add cumin and red chilly and stir it till cumin and chilly start changing color. Now add this tadaka to dal.

    Masoor dal is ready, serve with main course along with chapatti and rice.
