Yakult is a fermented milk probiotic containing lactic acid bacteria- Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota. It is marketed as dietary supplement drink that restore the balance of the beneficial bacteria in the gut. It is recommended to take 1-2 bottle of Yakult per day.

Lactobacillus casei is strictly fermentative Gram-positive bacteria, a member of the broad classification of lactic acid bacteria. Lactobacillus bacteria are used in fermented and non-fermented foods as these are able to inhibit bad bacteria that cause food spoilage. These are safe and non-pathogenic.
