Composition of Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

Ketoconazole I.P. 1% w/v

Ketoconazole is cis-1-acetyl-4-[[(2RS,4RS)-2-(2,4-dichlorophenyl)-2-(1H-imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-1,3-dioxolan-4- yl]methoxyl]phenylpiperazine. Ketoconazole contains not less than 98.0 percent and not more than 102.0 percent of C26H28Cl2N4O4, calculated on the dried basis.

Description: A white to off-white, crystalline powder

Ketoconazole is used for the local treatment of vaginal candidiasis and for dermatophyte infections.

It is also used in the treatment of Malassezia folliculitis either resistant to fluconazole, terbinafine, or itraconazole or in patients intolerant of these antifungals; chronic mucocutaneous, cutaneous, and oropharyngeal candidiasis either resistant to fluconazole or itraconazole or in patients intolerant of these antifungals.

Ketoconazole topical is used to treat fungal infections such as athlete’s foot, jock itch, ringworm, and seborrhea.

Important Therapeutic Uses

Seborrheic dermatitis (also known as dandruff, seborrheic eczema and seborrheic psoriasis): A common skin condition affectcing scalp causing scaly patches, red skin and stubborn dandruff. Seborrheic dermatitis can also affect oily areas of the body, such as the face, upper chest, back, eyebrows, beard area and groins.

Dandruff: Condition in which scaly material shed from the scalp; applied to that normally shed from the scalp epidermis as well as to the excessive scaly material associated with disease. The condition may spread unless checked and in rare cases may extend to the eyebrows, ears, nose, and neck, causing a reddening of the skin in those areas.

Tinea versicolor (also known as dermatomycosis furfuracea, pityriasis versicolor, and tinea flava): an eruption of tan or brown branny patches on the skin of the trunk, often appearing white, in contrast with hyperpigmented skin after exposure to the summer sun; caused by growth of the fungus Malassezia furfur in the stratum corneum with minimal inflammatory reaction. Treatment of the infection may not immediately result in normalization of pigment to the affected sites. Normalization of pigment following successful therapy is variable and may take months, depending on individual skin type.

How to apply Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

  1. Wet hair thoroughly.
  2. Massage with finger tips 5 ml shampoo on thoroughly wet hairs till lather is formed and keep for 5 minutes. Rinse with water.
  3. Initially, use 5 ml shampoo twice a week for 4-8 weeks. Subsequently, use 5 ml shampoo once a week.
  4. For the treatment of pityriasis versicolor apply once daily for maximum 5 days (prophylaxis apply once daily for up to 3 days before sun exposure); leave preparation on for 3–5 minutes before rinsing.
  5. Ketoconazole shampoo can be used as body wash for seborrhoeic dermatitis.

Suggestions, Contraindications, Interactions, Side-effects, and Warnings

  1. Apply twice weekly for 2–4 weeks (prophylaxis apply once every 1–2 weeks).
  2. In case rash appear or condition does not improve after 2-4 weeks, consult a doctor.
  3. This product is for External Use Only.
  4. It should not be used by mouth for superficial fungal infections. It has been associated with fatal hepatotoxicity.
  5. Avoid eye and mouth contact with shampoo.
  6. If shampoo gets into eyes rinse thoroughly.
  7. NIZORAL Shampoo is contraindicated in persons who have known hypersensitivity to the active ingredient or excipients of this formulation.
  8. Severe hypersensitivity reactions, including anaphylaxis, have been reported during post-marketing use of NIZORAL. If a reaction suggesting sensitivity or chemical irritation should occur, use of the medication should be discontinued.
  9. Patients who develop allergic reactions, such as generalized rash, skin reactions, severe swelling, angioedema, or shortness of breath should discontinue Shampoo and contact their physician immediately.
  10. Do not use in pregnancy or breastfeeding without consulting doctor.
  11. Do not use on children below the age of 12 years wihout asking doctor.
  12. Do not use if skin is broken or inflamed.
  13. Keep out of reach of children. In case, it is swallowed accidently, Immediately go to hospital.
  14. The following have been reported with the use of NIZORAL® (ketoconazole) 2% Shampoo: hair discoloration and abnormal hair texture, removal of the curl from permanently waved hair, itching, skin the burning sensation and contact dermatitis, hypersensitivity, angioedema, alopecia, rash, urticaria, skin irritation, dry skin, and application site reactions.
  15. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Ketoconazole should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
  16. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies in nursing women.
  17. For Pediatric Use Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.
  18. Wash your hands with soap and water before and after you use this medicine.
